Counseling Overview

As South Elementary's school counselor, my role extends to many areas to help your child feel safe and heard. My belief is that the whole child matters and I want to help create and ensure an environment that helps guide each and every one of our students to find their full potential.

The school counseling program at South is designed and implemented for the purpose of supporting the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of all students in an effort to accomplish the goal of creating life-long, persistent learners.

How is this accomplished?

Here are just a few of the ways:

• Classroom lessons

• Individualized behavioral and emotional support

• Weekly small group support

Classroom Lessons: Counselor-led classroom lessons discussing social and emotional topics provide all students the opportunity to learn important life skills so that they can reach their full potential in the classroom and in life as a whole.

Individualized Behavioral and Emotional Support: One-on-one counseling services are provided for children experiencing a variety of obstacles. Referrals can come from parents, teachers, staff, or the student. Providing support through processing, teaching coping strategies, and follow-ups are utilized to best support the student.

Group Counseling: Group counseling allows students to share similar experiences and learn from one another. These groups can cover topics such as social skills, anxiety, friendship and communication skills, building self-esteem, and emotional regulation, just to name a few.
